fAABI were delighted to extend an invitation on Tuesday 7th May 2019 to Rachel Martin-Peer, one of very few female taxi drivers in London, to give us and our beneficiaries a talk about her experiences as a Cabbie. 
Following a number of careers, Rachel’s husband, who was a taxi driver at the time, encouraged the venture- and Rachel did not hesitate to set her mind to it! In order to become an official London cabbie, Rachel studied 320,000 streets and learned 320 routes- amazingly, she doesn’t need a sat-nav!
Becoming a London tour guide seemed like the natural next step, and Rachel decided to combine her career as a cabbie with her career as a tour guide, so Rachel has been offering tours of London from her black cab for almost a decade now!
Attendees were especially intrigued to hear the effect Rachel’s career has had on her mind- she explained that remembering key points of London has stimulated her memory, and she’s found her memory has definitely improved due to regularly testing herself.
The talk was followed by a Q&A session, and beneficiaries had the chance to quiz Rachel on some of her knowledge! The event was described as one attendee as ‘’an insightful evening! I learnt so much about a career that usually gets overlooked.’’
Overall, the evening was a great success with around 30 attendees who “really enjoyed the evening and would love to have Rachel back.’’ The event would not have happened if it were not for the kindness of Rachel Martin-Peer who kindly accepted our invitation.
